Maison Canopée

The project

Client: Private
Programme: Construction of a single-family house
Areas: 250 sqm habitable
Delivery: 2010

Builder: GICO
Timber panels: BOIS et FUTUR

Ranked among the most ecological houses in France, the Maison Canopée is located at the heart of the village of Montfort-l'Amaury on a 1,600 sqm wooded plot. Designed in 2010 and lived in for 10 years by the architect Emmanuel COSTE (also the author of Yann Arthus-Bertrand's Bonne Maison), it is exemplary through its architecture and its low ecological footprint.

Its bioclimatic design and constructive principles make it possible to do without heating, while offering very high comfort.

A large living space opens widely onto a beautiful timber terrace facing due south. The plot is a true haven of greenery, with a biological swimming corridor, jacuzzi, hen house and permaculture vegetable garden.

The organisation of spaces is ideal, offering a balance between shared and private spaces over 290 sqm of usable floor area. On the ground floor: the entrance opens onto a double-height volume largely open to the garden, directly distributing the kitchen (pantry) – dining – living – music-room space. A more private wing comprises the master suite, a studio bedroom and a WC.

On the upper floor: a mezzanine library above the entrance, 4 bedrooms (3 with mezzanines) and amenities (bathroom, WC). On the north side (entrance): a carport (equipped with a charging station), a garage-workshop and a 50 sqm cellar.

The house's structure is in solid timber, with reinforced insulation and Passive-level air-tightness, dual-flow ventilation, triple glazing, solar thermal and photovoltaic panels, a rotating wood stove, home automation, planted roofs and rainwater harvesting. The Maison Canopée was awarded the PREBAT prize and recognised by the FEDEI. It has been featured several times in the press and presented on several TV programmes.
